LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming) welcomes the launch of the new Agriculture Bill, which sets out the Government’s vision for post-Brexit farming.

Caroline Drummond, CEO at LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming) said:

“Having been at the forefront of developing and delivering more sustainable farming for over 27 years, we are pleased that the environment features so strongly in the Agriculture Bill. We are also pleased to see the Bill setting out measures to strengthen transparency in the supply chain.

“Whilst we applaud the environmental measures laid out in the Bill, we feel it falls short in not addressing issues around the importance of productivity, post-Brexit trade arrangements and enforcement and the opportunity of health and nutrition embedded as a quality of our food.

“We wholeheartedly support the Government’s ambitions to recognise the depth and breadth of public goods and services UK farmers and land managers deliver and welcome the fact that they will be rewarded for the delivery of vital environmental outcomes and the provision of public access.

“LEAF’s Integrated Farm Management approach addresses many of the public goods referred to in the Bill, including more sustainable water and soil management, animal welfare, enhancement of biodiversity and access to the countryside. We understand only too well the importance of ensuring people understand and appreciate what farmers deliver. LEAF Open Farm Sunday sees hundreds of farmers across the country open their gates to welcome the public and showcase all that British agriculture delivers.

“We look forward to hearing further announcements from the Government and more detail.”
